Purpose:
 The Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport takes necessary measures to develop shipping, shipbuilding and related industries including promotion of the research and development advanced ship technology, establishment of rules and regulations for ship safety and marine pollution, conducts of ship inspections and tonnage measurements as well as international cooperation through the OECD Council Working Party on Shipbuilding and the Asia-Pacific Shipbuilding Expert Meeting.

Brief profile:
 The Ocean Policy Research Foundation (OPRF) was established in 1975. OPRF has since made contributions to the development of Japan's shipbuilding and related industries through a wide range of activities. Today, OPRF is strengthening its commitment to ocean-related projects.
 Among major research projects and R&D efforts undertaken by OPRF are: CIMS for shipbuilding use; research to reduce environmental impact of ship emission; development of an innovative, highly efficient natural gas engine system, and ocean think tank activities.
