OUTLINE
 Hitachi Zosen Diesel & Engineering Co., Ltd. (HZ D&E), located in the Nagasu-machi area of Kumamoto Prefecture and facing the Ariake Sea, it compromises a core part of Hitachi Zosen Group's largest and most comprehensive and integrated plant for both advanced shipbuilding and land machinery.
 It was established in 1997 as Ariake Machinery Works upon the relocation of the machinery division at Sakurajima Works in Osaka City, which opened nearly a century ago as Osaka Iron Works, the predecessor of Hitachi Zosen. In October 1999, HZ D&E was established as an independent company.
 HZ D&E's primary business is the production and sales of largescale diesel engines for primary ship propulsion. It also promotes the construction of high-tech information processing systems, and the automation and mechanization of production facilities, placing due consideration on both working environment and environmental conservation, while developing a business upon a foundation of high technology and reliability.
 HZ D&E makes every effort to produce products that will continually satisfy customer needs.
HISTORY
1900 Osaka Iron Works, the predecessor of Hitachi Zosen Corporation, builds Sakurajima Works in Osaka City.
1950 Begins manufacturing Hitachi-B&W diesel engines.
1971 Begins manufacturing Hitachi-SULZER diesel engines.
1997 Ariake Machinery Works is completed in Kumamoto Prefecture.
1999 HZ D&E is formed from Hitachi Zosen Corp. as an independent company.
2002 Hitachi-B&W two-stroke diesel engine reaches 20-million horse powers.

 Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Inc. (NSR) was newly established on April 1, 2003 as a subsidiary of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES).
 The company took over the business line of Shipbuilding Division of Niigata Engineering Co., Ltd., with its 100 years of experience.
 It builds special purpose vessels such as salvage, anchor handling supply and buoy laying vessels, medium-sized tankers, various types of fishing vessels, research vessels and training vessels.
 For applying the integrated technologies of MES to its own vast experience, the company has been aiming to develop its business line and enter new fields.
 In addition, NSR does repair work at its shipyards in Niigata and Misaki.
