Uraga Dock, the predecessor of Sumitomo Heavy Industries' Uraga Shipyard, was founded in 1897. It was in Uraga that Japan's shipbuilding industry was born and Commodore Perry's “Black Ships” arrived during the Edo period. After over 100 years of history in shipbuilding with more than 1,200 ships built, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. was newly born to realize flexible and speedy management to meet the changing market demands. Effective April 1, 2003, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. Through this reorganization, Sumitomo Heavy Industries' entire shipbuilding and repair businesses were transferred to this new company, apart from sales and marketing operations, which continue to be managed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. Since reorganization, Yokosuka Shipyard has been concentrating in building of mid-size tankers such as Aframax tankers with advanced technologies, and it now aims to meet the future market demands in providing various types of ships by improving its operations and also by analyzing the market.
