In the next, the simulations were done at the ship propulsion point to predict the full scale maneuvering performance. Figs. 13-15 shows the comparison of simulated turning and zig-zag maneuvers between for model propulsion point and ship propulsion point. Here, all the data are presented with model scale. As the propeller loading is higher at model propulsion point than at ship propulsion point, the rudder effectiveness of free running model is higher than that of full ship. So, the free running model shows better maneuvering performance than full ship generally. In this comparison, the turning radius and overshoot angles increase with the change of propeller loading condition from model propulsion point to ship propulsion point. The differences of 2nd overshoot angle for 10°/10°zig-zag maneuver is so large that it amounts to 13°. So, it should be very careful to estimate the maneuvering performance of a ship with free running data.
