4.2 Validation of Effectiveness of Radar Simulator Training

For 18 students in all the students who had already received the simulator training, positioning training by on-board radar was carried out. Fig. 9 and Fig. 10 showed each mean value of total working time and positioning error in first three experiments by the simulator and last forth experiment using on-board radar according to the briefing. The total time in both experiments remarkably increases regardless of the existence of the briefing, because of the difference between simulator image and on-board radar image.
In Fig. 11, the comparison of training result using the simulator and training result using on-board radar is shown. The value at the third simulator training was made to be reference value (1.0). It is proved that there is a reason why the total time increases for the selection time of the target. The simulator faithfully does not reproduce the shade and shadow effect. It seemed to embarrass the trainee at complexity (degree of the clearness of the coastline) of the image, difference of the brightness, difference of the image resolution, existence of another anchorages ships, etc. The selection time of the objects seemed to increase as a result. This is a problem in hardware of the radar simulator training that should be discussed.
On the positioning error, the accuracy is improved by making the briefing. From the result of the dispersion analysis, the significance was confirmed (p=0.0018). The effectiveness of the radar simulator training was verified from the viewpoint of the accuracy.
