1. Research and Development on Marine Ceramic Engines Burning Improved Natural Gas (The Foundation Support) 7 5 Department of Administration, Gou Kato From fiscal year 1998 to 1999, the foundation conducted research and development on the utilization of marine engines burning natural gas to reduce fuel consumption and drastically cut down on nitrogen oxides from exhaust gas. It also developed technology to efficiently supply hydrogen with high energy and carbon monoxide, by catalyst reaction between natural gas and carbon dioxide in exhaust gas and absorption of the thermal energy. From fiscal year 2000 to 2001, the foundation conducted research on a high thermal efficiency system for collecting the exhausted energy and burning with the minimum discharge of nitrogen oxides, and also produced a mono-cylinder engine with a ceramic shield as the first stage to enable burning of the improved quality gas. Based on the results, this fiscal year, the foundation will develop an optimal burning system for combined fuel of hydrogen with carbon using the total engine system with synthesized elements. It will also attempt to evaluate a mono-cylinder engine with a high efficiency combustion chamber for the fuel. Then, verifying the superiority of the engine and measures to develop a multiple cylinder engine with synthetic energy utilization is intended, by practically developing a quality improvement apparatus for natural gas and a heat exchanger for collecting thermal energy. Through research and development of this engine system, global environmental problems will be solved, and the shipbuilding technologies and industries will be progressed.
