2. Research on ocean observation sensors on the stratosphere platform 7 5 Marine Technology Department T. Aoki Develops a collection and measurement system of the air to observe matter causing global warming.
3. Research and development of autonomous underwater vehicles 7 5 Marine Technology Department T. Aoki Develops long distance AUV navigation to collect sea water samples at any location and at any depth.
4. Research on the utilization of ocean energy 15 14 Marine Technology Department H. Oosawa Develops a diffusion technique for water lumps containing little oxygen and the technique for pumping up deep sea water. Utilizes the generator plant practically by wave power.
5. Construction of ships for exploring deep earth 16 13 Ocean Drilling Program Department S. Takagawa Constructs ships capable of deep drilling in deep sea to conduct research on earth environmental changes, attaining mantle crust, earth crust movement, life forms and resources on the seafloor.
6. Development of a technique for exploring the deep earth 16 13 Ocean Drilling Program Department S. Takagawa Establishes long-term observation station in the deep earth crust using a borehole. Develops maintenance and observation techniques of the station.
7. Development of a technique for maintaining extremely severe environments   2 Ocean Drilling Program Department S. Takagawa Develops an experiment system capable of cultivating microorganisms in the same environment as the deep sea crust.
8. Research on ROV in sea ice areas 5 5 Marine Technology Department T. Murashima Conducts research on the observation techniques of sea water under ice with ROV. Designs and conducts ROV performance tests required in future.
9. Research on survey apparatus for sea floor crust structure with electromagnetic pulse 3 1 Marine Technology Department H. Yoshida Develops apparatus with electromagnetic pulse to survey the crust structure on the deep sea floor. Conducts research on electric wave propagation in the crust.
10. Research on the dynamic behavior of flexible pipes 3 3 Marine Technology Department H. Oosawa Conducts research on the large displacement of flexible pipes under current and waves, and on the interaction between a floating platform and flexible pipes to exploit the resources in deep sea.
11. Research on observation techniques of heat water plume 4 3 Ocean Drilling Program Department S. Kyo Develops a chemical observation method for plume, and for the behavior modeling of plume. Conducts fluid mechanic tests to ensure the modeling. Conducts field observations of plume on sea floor.
12. Research on hybrid vehicles (AUV/ROV) for shallow sea 4 2 Marine Technology Department H. Yoshida Develops long distance unmanned submersible capable of collecting data in shallow and wide sea areas to conduct research on the circulation of matter causing global warming, and on the environment monitor.
13. Research on gas storage using nano material 3 1 Marine Technology Department T. Momotome Conducts technical research on gas absorption and gas discharge ability of nano material for the fuel cells of long distance AUV.
14. Research on an automatic navigation system of a towed body Inactive  Ocean Drilling Program Department K. Wada Establishes an automatic navigation system capable of enabling an unmanned vehicle or a towed body to trace on a designated line.
15. Research on buoyancy material with high capacity (small specific gravity and high strength)  Inactive  Ocean Drilling Program Department H. Yano Conducts research on the combination of ceramic spheres and glass spheres covered by plastics as buoyancy material for use in deep sea.
