ISO 24409 consists of the following parts, under the general title Ships and marine technology - Shipboard safety signs:

The absence of a common approach to safety signing and associated systems of graphical communication on board ships has been identified through continued growth in travel and extensive mobility. This has highlighted the need to provide ship passengers and crew with a standardised approach to safety signing on board ships to consistently and effectively communicate safety information.

　

On an international basis, there is a need to provide people travelling on board ships with safety signing and associated systems that are generally consistent with safety signing used in land-based applications.

　

This International Standard is intended to meet these needs, and to harmonize shipboard signs with existing internationally standardized symbols to the extent practicable. It clarifies and supplements existing standards intended for land-based applications, to take into account the specific needs of the shipboard environment.

　

This International Standard consists of three parts:

　

Although this International Standard is intended to harmonise with ISO 17631 to the extent practicable, it should be noted that the applications of the two standards are quite different. The sizes of the signs specified in this standard, as opposed to the symbols for plans specified in ISO 17631, and the differences in the intended audiences for the two standards, mean that in some cases, the symbols used in this standard can provide more detailed information than the corresponding symbols in ISO 17631.
