OIL SPILL AND SAKHALIN-II OIL DEVELOPING PROJECT
Thursday, July 25, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Room 302
Thursday, July 25, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Room 302

The Sea of Okhotsk is one of the world's most biologically productive areas. Both people of the Russian Far East and Japan harvest rich fisheries stocks of crab, shrimp, pollock and other seafood products in the Sea of Okhotsk. The coastlines of the Sea of Okhotsk still provide spawning grounds for healthy, wild Pacific salmon runs that are in decline in other parts of the North Pacific. Yet new offshore oil developments along the northeastern shore of Sakhalin Island have greatly increased risks to the Sea of Okhotsk and its shorelines through an increased risk of oil spills. Since July 1999, crude oil production has already been started and conveyed to Korea and Japan. And September 1999, a small-scale oil spill has also occurred. In this workshop, we will discuss following matters:

1) What is effective preparedness for oil spill in the time of peace?
2) When an actual oil spill happens, what should we do?
3) After the oil spill, how should be the restoration and compensation?

This workshop will explore the many specialized issues facing professional women working in the fields of marine science, technology or policy across the Pacific region. The workshop is designed to provide an opportunity for participants to share knowledge, information, and experiences. Short presentations will be given by several successful women leaders from government, scientific institutions, and academia. The participants will discuss topical issues, identify requisite tools and skills and develop solutions and strategies for effectively dealing with problems confronting women professionals today.

Urgent Problems Facing the Asia-Pacific Regions in the 21st Century

It is important to know and understand Asia-Pacific Regional problems in light of increasing populations, and growing food and energy demands in the Pacific Century. Most importantly, with our interest in marine science and technology, we must understand the important role of the ocean in all aspects.

The objective of this forum is to identify short-term problems and investigate solutions, advance marine science and technology collaborations, and encourage industrial activity and involvement. The forum is not a platform for long-term issues, but will study short-term issues in a concrete and efficient manner.

Local environment and regulation, socio-economic situations are different for each region. Therefore, lessons learned from successes and failures for each region are important and essential as well. First, the panelist (invited from each region) will have a focal point clarified based on the regional report. Then, a discussion will be made between the panelist and participants. Finally, a partnership and collaboration for concrete solutions will be discussed and concluded.
