II. Japanese Language Education Fund
Since 1994, The Nippon Foundation has presented eight endowments to 11 universities in six countries to support the teaching of Japanese language and culture, notably the training of teachers of Japanese, curriculum development and related activity. The Scholarship Division assumed responsibility for the administration of The Nippon Foundation Fund for Japanese Language Education (NFFJLE) Program in March 1998.

III. Regional Administrators' Professional Development Fellowship Program
Inaugurated in 1998, this program provides up to five fellowships per year to young Japanese officials at town, city and prefectural government offices to pursue graduate study outside Japan. The aim of this program is to foster professional development in regional government affairs in Japan. The program will be completed in 2004.
 
IV. Transport and Maritime Administrators' Professional Development Fellowship Program
Resumed in 2002, this program provides fellowships to up to four transport and maritime officials per year to pursue one- or two-years' graduate study outside Japan. The aim of this program is to foster professional development in transport and maritime affairs in Japan with an emphasis on enhancing understanding of culture, traditions and customs in foreign countries and on nurture global sensibilities and creativity.
 
V. Japanese University Faculty Overseas Lecture Program
Initiated in 1998, this program supports the internationalization of higher education in Japan by providing awards to faculty members at Japanese universities to teach abroad.
 
Purpose: The purpose of this program is to offer opportunities to full-time faculty members at Japanese universities to teach abroad in their respective fields of specialization*. Awardees are expected to actively participate in the academic life of the host institution and thereby acquire first-hand knowledge and understanding of academic practices, and institutional and student needs and expectations. Upon return to Japan, awardees are expected to contribute to the internationalization of their respective institutions.
 
*All fields falling within the parameters of the social sciences and humanities with the exception of Japanese language teaching and Japanese language teaching methodology.
 
Eligibility: Full-time professors (ky〓ju), associate professors (joky〓ju), or lecturers (k〓shi) at 4-year Japanese universities or Japanese graduate schools. Sufficient proficiency to teach in the language of instruction at the receiving institution.
 
Number of Awards: Approximately 5 awards per year.
 
Requirements: Teach a regular course(s) (including courses offered in degree, certificate and diploma programs) at a 4-year university, graduate school or an equivalent institution of higher learning outside of Japan. The length of the grant period is a minimum of 3 months or one-term (as defined by the host institution) and a maximum of 12 months.
 
Conditions: Awardees will receive an amount sufficient to cover the costs of economy-class round-trip travel, insurance, living expenses, and teaching material. The specific amounts will be determined by the Foundation based on the awardee's position and the duration overseas. Expenses of any accompanying person(s) are not covered by the award. Preference will be given to applicants with partial support, including in-kind assistance, such as housing, from the receiving institution.
