The Sasakawa Fellowship Program
 
SYLFF Program:
The program supports the education of graduate students with high potential for future leadership in international affairs. The program covers students enrolled in: 1) master's and doctoral programs in Asian and African Studies specializing in either Japan, China, India, Korea, Southeast Asia, the Middle East or Sub-Saharan Africa, 2) master's program in urban studies, and 3) doctoral program in population studies.
 
Selection Process:
SYLFF fellowships are awarded to students enrolled in a program at the Center for Asian and African Studies or the Center for Demographic and Urban Development Studies who have the best grade average upon admission. Fellowships are for up to three years. In the Center for Demographic and Urban Development Studies, selection is conducted each semester, and rotated to students earning the best grade average upon completion of each semester. Fellowships are usually for US$300 a month for masters degree students, and US$400 for PhD students. To date thirty-five (35) fellowships have been awarded.

The Intellectual and Cultural Change in East-Central Europe Program
 
SYLFF Program:
The program supports the education of graduate students with high potential for future leadership. The program is open to doctoral students majoring in comparative literature, art history, philosophy, culture and communication, education, politics, economics, sociology, and law history.
 
Selection Process:
There are two types of awards: 1) fellowships for doctoral candidates for up to three years, and 2) project fellowships for up to one year. Fellowships usually include: EUR895 per month, EUR255 book allowance for a six-month period, and a travel allowance. To date thirteen (13) fellowships have been awarded.
