Production

　

　Ship machinery and equipment manufactured in Japan in 2000 totaled \722.2 billion, down 3.4 percent year on year, registering much the same amount as the year before.

　To break down 2000 production in terms of value by item, marine internal combustion engines amounted to \264.8 representing 36.7 percent of total production.

　Japan's exports in 2000 of ship machinery and equipment registered substantial increases due to the fact that those of diesel engines remarkably increased - up 9.1 percent year on year - to \194.7 billion.

　The ratio of exports to gross domestic production (\722.2 billion) was about 27.0 percent, up 3.6 points from 1999.

　To break down exports further into smaller items, outboard motors constituted a large portion of exports in terms of value amounting to \86.7 billion (representing 44.6 percent of total amount of exports), diesel engines to \29.5 billion (15.1 percent), nautical equipment to \25.8 billion (13.3 percent), parts and accessories to \23.6 billion (12.1 percent).

　Imports by shipbuilders of ship machinery and equipment in 2000 increased 19.3 percent year on year to \25.3 billion.

　By item, imports of outfitting remarkably improved - 40.3 percent - to \10.1 billion. As for others, those of marine auxiliary machinery rose 10.3 percent to \4.3 billion; on the other hand, those of marine internal combustion engines decreased 13.5 percent to \4.5 billion.
