MES Completes World's Largest Class New Type Diesel: Year's Total Output To Mark All-time High of 1.8 Million kW
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) recently completed a new type of diesel engine (Mitsui-MAN B&W 11K98MC), one of the world's most powerful, at its Tamano Works. The new engine was delivered for installation in a 6,000-TEU containership built by Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
Model K98MC is the latest high-efficiency diesel engine type, and was developed by MAN B&W Diesel of Denmark in 1999 to meet the demand for more powerful main engines to propel containerships, the standard size of which is ever increasing. Its 980-mm cylinder bore is the largest in the world, and its per-cylinder power output is as high as 5,720 kW/7,780 PS. MES had already completed a 10-cylinder Mitsui-MAN B&W 10K98MC unit in April 2001, which was recently followed by the Mitsui-MAN B&W 11K98MC unit with an extra cylinder and a correspondingly increased output. The second unit of this type was scheduled for completion and delivery in mid-December.
Since entering into a technical license agreement with B&W in 1926, MES has built up its cumulative diesel engine output to become the leading engine builder in the world. In 1999, the company achieved a cumulative diesel power output total of 25.7 million kW /35 million PS for the first time in the world for any single make. The record continues to be broken (reaching 27.9 million kW /38 million PS by the end of October 2001).
Annual output in fiscal 2001 is expected to reach an alltime high of 1.8 million kW /2.5 million PS (on a shop trial basis), to which eight huge units including the recently completed 11K98MC will make major contributions.
