If there is a hazard due to emission of methane, it should be described in the column for HAZARD. This entry should be discussed at DSC 6, because we have little information at present.

(152) I can not agree with the text proposed by the UK and I am of the opinion that the following text should be kept in this column, because continuous ventilation defined in paragraph 3.5 in the BC Code is not necessary for this cargo:

"The cargo spaces should be provided with an effective power ventilation system. Ventilation fans should normally be run continuously whenever cargoes are on board. Where this is impracticable, they should be operated as weather permits and in any case for a reasonable period prior to discharge."

It should be noted that cargoes for which continuous ventilation is required can not be carried by existing bulk carriers for the carriage of this cargo. On the other hand, Japan has experience of carriage of this cargo by bulk carriers not fitted with special ventilation ducts and no accident due to discontinuity of ventilation is reported. Therefore, I wrote the sentence intentionally to avoid the confusion with continuous ventilation.

Therefore, the following text may be appropriate:

"This cargo should not be ventilated during voyage. See also DISCHARGE."

(157) I would like explain about the conflict of the descriptions for this cargo.

・ In the existing BC Code (1998 Edition), ILMENITE is in Appendix A and ILMENITE SAND is in Appendix C.

・ The BCSN for ILMENITE is "ILMEMTE SAND".

・ For example, the TML of a sample of ILMENITE measured in Japan was 7.7 % (FMP: 8.5 %). Ninety percents of the particles of the sample were 0.15 to 0.5 mm.
