5. International symbols for sea-ice conditions ("the egg")

Concentration (C): Total concentration of ice of the entire sea area under consideration

C = Ca + Cb + Cc

Concentration of ice classified according to thickness (for concentration 1/10 and over)

Ca: concentration of Sa-ice,

Cb: concentration of Sb-ice,

Cc: concentration of Sc-iec

 

Development

Sa: Thickest ice

Sb: Next thickest ice,

Sc: Third thickest ice

So: Development of ice with 1/10 concentration or less but thicker ice than Sa

Sd: If ice of other categories is present, mention the development of that ice.

 

Size of floe (F):

Fa: size of Sa-ice,

Fb: size of Sb-ice,

Fc: size of Sc-ice

Fp, Fs: Sizes of two most predominat types of ice regardless of S
