Development of the DK-36 Diesel engine

■Forward

The Daihatsu Diesel DK-series Diesel engine was developed with the basic concept of "environmental consciousness" and "high reliability/efficiency". The DK-series consists of DK-20, DK-26, DK-28 and DK-36 and covers a range of 350kW to 6325kW, and boasts a sales record of 2000 engines for propulsion, auxiliary, and land use.

The DK-36 engine was first presented as a V-type 12DK-36 in 1997, followed by the L-type 6DK-36 and 8DK-36 in 1999. The DK-36 engines cover a range of 2500kW to 6825kW, and provide customers with high engine performance, low NOx emission, and low vibration.

■Design concept and engine performance.

The DK-series engine has the following points to provide our customers with "total cost savings".

(1) High reliability and tolerance

To increase the maintenance interval and parts life, mechanical and thermal load margin have been increased by 20% compared with conventional engines. This is achieved by careful selection of materials and design and by having established appropreate cooling and lubrication standards.

(2) Low running cost

Low fuel consumption and low emission is achieved by designing the engine for high compression ratio, high pressure fuel injection, optimization of the combustion chamber, and careful matching of the air inlet and exhaust system. This design also allows for the use of heavy fuel oil in its output range.

Also, component parts have been reduced by 40% due to its simple design, and all major bolts are hydraulically tightened to reduce maintenance time.

(3) Environmental consciousness

Tests of IMO NOx emission level under NK classification supervision has shown that the emission level is well below the set limit. This is achieved by careful matching of the turbocharger, inlet and exhaust system, combustion chamber design, and fuel injection system.

Also, noise has been reduced by 3-4dB(A) and vibration has been cut down to 1/4-1/2 with the use of high rigidity engine frame and bigger balance weight, improving the environment around the engine.

(4) High efficiency and compactness

The power ratio has been greatly improved compared to conventional engine, and design improvements allows for smaller overhaul space.

■Conclusion

The development of the DK-36 engine completes the DK-series lineup, offering our customers with a wide range of output. Never satisfied with the current standard of performance and quality, Daihatsu Diesel will continue to improve its line of engines to further satisfy the needs of our customers.
