2] Prevention of Drugs and Firearms Smuggling
As previously mentioned, the smuggling of drugs, such as stimulants, together with firearms has become a serious issue. As regards stimulants in particular, the amount JCG was involved in uncovering in 1999 at 785.6kg broke all previous records. JCG regards preventing the influx of drugs along the shoreline as an extremely important challenge.
To this end, JCG is taking the following measures:
・Promotion of information gathering and analysis activities with respect to vessels and individuals suspected of contributing to smuggling;
・Thorough implementation of boarding inspections on vessels entering ports from regions that drugs and firearms are highly likely to flow out of;
・Strengthening surveillance and alert with patrol vessels, craft and aircraft and from the shore of waters in which it is highly likely that maritime transhipment will occur;
・Implementation of The Month for Anti-Smuggling Campaign Along the Shoreline;
