Of the 1,142 examinees in 1998, 1,013 were subjected to disciplinary punishment, with 112 being suspended from duty (108 for one month and four for 1.5 months), 901 reprimanded,125 acquitted and four exempted from punishment. Recommendations were not made against any of the 145 designated persons concerned in judged marine accidents.

3. Marine accidents judged
(1) Category of accident
Collisions accounted for the largest number of marine accidents upon which judgments were pronounced in 1998 at 328, or 41.4% of the total, followed by groundings, which numbered 156, or 19.7% of the total, and machinery failure, of which there were 120 cases, equivalent to 15.2% of the total. Combined, these three categories accounted for 76.3% of all marine accidents judged during the year.
