Note "Newly recognized" refers to the number of incidents between January and December 1998 determined by commissioners to be marine accidents, as defined in Article 2 of the Law.

 

3. Offer for commencement of inquiry

(1) Marine accidents subjected to inquiry

Marine accidents for which commissioners made offers for the commencement of inquiry in 1998 amounted to 731, involving 1,098 vessels. By the category of marine accidents, collisions accounted for the largest portion of the total at 316, involving 655 vessels. This was followed by groundings, which numbered 133 and involved 141 vessels, and machinery failure, which numbered 90 and involved 91 vessels.

a. Type of vessel

Fishing vessels represented the greatest portion of the total number of vessels involved in marine accidents subjected to inquiry in 1998 at 441, followed by cargo ships at 266.

In terms of tonnage, vessels of less than 20 gross tons accounted for 420 vessels, making this the largest weight group, followed by vessels of between 200 and 500 tons, which numbered 181; vessels between 100 and 200 tons, which numbered 140; and vessels of between 500 and 1,600 tons, which amounted to 81. As these numbers show, vessels of less than 500 gross tons accounted for 72.6% of the total.
