Proclamation of Marine Accidents Inquiry Law (Enforcement on February 29, 1948) The purpose of law is changed from disciplinary punishments of mariners, to the investigation of causes of marine accidents.

Foundation of High Marine Accidents Inquiry Bureau in Tokyo and Local Marine Accidents Inquiry Bureau in Otaru, Yokohama, Osaka and Moji under the Ministry of Communications Establishment of Cabinet Order for Enforcement of Marine Accidents Inquiry Law, Regulations for Enforcement of Marine Accidents Inquiry Law, and Service Regulations of Marine Accidents Inquiry Agency Commissioners transferred to Japanese Marine Safety Agency inaugurated.

Foundation of Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office as an attached organization of Japanese Marine Safety Agency

Transfer of Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office from Japanese Marine Safety Agency to Marine Accidents Inquiry Agency

Aomori-Hakodate ferry boat TOYA-MARU disaster, involving 4 other vessels, causing 1,430 deaths totally, the largest marine accident in marine accident history in Japan.

(Judgement of the first instance in January 1956 in Hakodate and judgement of the second instance in January 1959)

Foundation of branch offices in Sendai and Hiroshima.

1955 ◆

Collision between Uno-Takamatsu ferry boat SHIUN-MARU and Uno-Takamatsu ferry cargo boat UKO-MARU N0.3, foundering of SHIUN-MARU, causing 168 deaths

(Judgement of the first instance in January 1956 in Kobe and judgement of the second instance in August 1960)

Foundation of branch offices in Nagasaki

Cargo boat BOLIVAR-MARU disaster causing breakage of hull and 31 deaths

(Judgement of the first instance in November 1972 in Yokohama and judgement of the second instance in January 1973)

Cargo boat CALIFORNIA-MARU disaster, causing breakage of hull and 5 deaths

(Judgement of the first instance in September 1973 in Yokohama)

Foundation of branch office in Naha along with Okinawa restoration

1974 ◆

Collision between oil tanker YUYO-MARU N0.10 and cargo boat PACIFIC-ARES, causing loss of YUYO-MARU N0.10, burning of PACIFIC-ARES and 33 deaths

(Judgement of the first instance in May 1975 in Yokohama and judgement of the second instance in May 1976)

1988 ◆

Collision between Japanese Self Defense Force submarine NADASHIO and pleasure fishing boat FUJI-MARU N0.1, foundering of FUJI-MARU N0.1, causing 30 deaths

(Judgement of the first instance in July 1989 in Yokohama and judgement of the second instance in August 1990)

1997 ◆

Grounding of oil tanker DIAMOND GRACE, causing crude oil discharge
