1) Vessels
1] Japanese Vessels
MAIA has jurisdiction over any marine accidents caused by Japanese vessels not only in the Japanese territorial waters but also in all waters in the world.
2] Foreign Vessels
Regarding foreign Flag vessels, MAIA has jurisdiction over marine accidents that have taken place in the Japanese territorial waters. But this is inapplicable to such vessels as public vessels or military vessels that enjoy extraterritoriality.
2) Area
The jurisdiction of a case to be inquired into falls under the Local Marine Accidents Inquiry Agency which has jurisdiction over the location where the marine casualty took place.
