5. Session II: Southern Ocean Variability
Southern Ocean Variability
Chair: W. White, T. Motoi
Large scale variabilities of climate system of the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice in the Indian and Pacific sectors around the Antarctica will be discussed focusing on data analyses from observations and coupled ocean-atmosphere model experiments.
Climate variabilities such as interannual, interdecadal and centurial variations are found from coupled model experiments, but their mechanisms and observational features are still not understood well. The relationship between the Indo-Pacific and the Southern Ocean variabilities is the key factor in this session to contribute for the researches on climate prediction and global warming issues. We will review the past researches and present the recent results about the Southern Ocean variabilities related to the Indian and the Pacific Oceans. Based on the discussions, directions of the future researches will be suggested.
