Session I: Indian Ocean Climate

Indian Ocean Climate

Chair: S. Godfrey, T. Yamagata

1) Discussion on observational data and modeling efforts toward understanding atmospheric and oceanic variabilities of the Indian Ocean and the surrounding seas.

2) Discussion on the future scope of the observational system and modeling research about climate variations in the Indian Ocean and the surrounding seas.

Climate variations in the Indian Ocean have a tremendous societal impact on a wide area around the Ocean including India, Kenya, Australia, and Indonesia. They even affect the rainy season and summer in China and the Far East. Despite the impact on those heavily populated area, the climate variations of the Indian Ocean have not been understood as much as those in the Atlantic and the Pacific. Since the discovery of the Indian Ocean Dipole in 1999, there has been a worldwide interest to develop observational networks in order to understand the overall atmosphere-ocean-land coupled system. In this context, this session intends to compare observational and modeling researches which have been conducted by each country and to deepen our understanding of the unique air-sea interaction in the Indian Ocean. Hopefully, we wish to contribute to a new unified direction of the future cooperative research and observational system.
