I will give a summary of our research initiatives that involve evaluating the future health and function of coral reef ecosystems. These research topics are: 1) remote sensing of coral reefs using multispectral, hyperspectral and laser airborne spectrometers; 2) understanding of nutrient inputs and net production of carbon in coral reefs; and 3) response of coral and coral reef communities to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, or saturation state of seawater. I will briefly outline the objectives and methods, and technology development for these research projects, and then present some recent conclusions. After briefly reviewing the present research, I will recommend specific goals and objectives for collaborative research programs between countries, specifically Japan and the US.
