IC card ticketing system: generic electronic ticket

The Railway Technical Research Institute is currently developing a non-contact railway card with a built-in IC chip to replace conventional magnetic cards, such as credit cards and magnetic season tickets. The system uses electric waves to read the information recorded on each card as passengers exit the ticket collection wicket, and calculates train fares automatically. Users have the advantage of being able to pass the wicket gate without having to purchase tickets or insert / take out magnetic cards. And the multi-function card offers credit as well. The advantages for railway operators are advanced security features against forgery and unauthorized alteration, and the data processing function on each card, enabling railway companies to accurately record the movement of passengers. The system also offers the possibility of better traffic demand controls like a peak load fare system. For example, different train fares could be set for different time bands according to the level of congestion.
