Ladies and Gentlemen
As introduced just now, I am Miami, President of the Japan Marine Standards Association. It's a great pleasure to be here.
Japan has assumed the responsibility for the office of the TC 8 Secretariat from this year on. At one stage we thought it would be too difficult to take on this work from the point of view of geography, language barriers and other matters. However, taking into account the recent development in the means of communication and other areas, at this point in time, though a little too late, Japan has decided to do its best with an intent of contributing to the world in terms of the given areas and also being of some service to the members of TC 8.
Now, recent developments in telecommunications technology are quite remarkable. On account of this, it has become possible for us to establish mutual understanding between people quite far apart, in the quickest way and with satisfactory accuracy. However, there is no more expedient way than meeting at one location to talk together. I expect that you will discuss to the fullest extent and that this TC 8 plenary meeting will produce fruitful results.
Now, I will emphasize another point, which is, that it is necessary for us to become intimate friends. If this party can be a useful place for free talking between participants and, furthermore, can contribute to establishing good relations among us, I, as the host, may feel it great satisfaction.
At this TC 8 plenary meeting, we have had a lot of representatives, coming from various parts of the world, to join the meeting. At the same time we were supported under the auspices of the Ministry of Transport, the Agency of Industrial Science & Technology, the Nippon Foundation and many others concerned. I express my heartfelt gratitude to all.
In conclusion, may I thank you ladies and gentlemen for listening to me so patiently, this evening !
