Japan's Largest Salvage Tug "Koyo Maru"

1. Foreword

In recent years, the enlarging trend of general ship size has come to necessitate, in the event of a maritime accident, quick and precise salvaging work by a rescue vessel with a large towing capacity especially where a large tanker is involved. Such rescue vessels are also required to serve multiple purposes including not only salvaging but also other offshore duties including cable laying and oceanographic surveys.

To meet these requirements, the "Koyo Maru" has been built to the joint order of Japan Ocean Tug Co., Ltd. and The Nippon Salvage Co., Ltd. Its towing capacity is the largest and its equipment the most up-to-date in Japan. This salvage tug was completed at the Shimonoseki Shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. to replace its predecessor of the same name. The vessel was delivered to its joint owners on June 15, 1998, and is now actively engaged in towage, salvaging and other off shore assignments in and out of the Japanese waters. An outline of the new salvage tug follows.
