3 Project

3.1 Objectives

The objectives of the project are, to construct a modern ship-breaking yard with systematic and organized manner at Adabiya Bay, which has a capacity of demolishing 8 VLCCs in a year. The project is aimed at:

─ Demolish aged ships for recycle

─ Supply scrapped materials for steel producing industry in Egypt

─ Eliminate sub-standard vessels from the world

─ Increase a world scrapping capacity of the aged ships

─ Reduce environmental pollution from ship-breaking industry

3.2 Location of Project Site

Fig.3.2.1 shows the location of projected site. The advantages of the location would be described as follows:

a) Since the Suez Canal is the strategic point for shipping from the Europe to the Middle East and Asia, the Adabiya Bay could be a convenient place for mobilization of scrapping ship from the homeport.

b) The Adabiya Bay has a sufficient mooring basin with deeper water depth than -10m and a vast land for yard layout facing the bay.

c) Easy supply of power sources and subsidiary materials such as an electric power, a fresh water, gas and oxygen, fuel oil.

d) Availability of convenient services from the Suez Shipyard, which is the main organization of the project, about maintenance, repair, parts supply, etc., of power plants, machines, cars, crane etc.

e) Shorter distance to the consuming place of Cairo

f) In particular, main organization undertaking the project is the Suez Shipyard, which has a long experience of shipbuilding, has already an experience of ship scrapping.

g) Used equipment from the scrapped ship could be recycled to the repairing ship at the Suez Shipyard.

h) Some of expensive equipment such as floating crane or a tugboat and so on could be rented from the Suez Shipyard.
