5. Summary

Preliminary results of the seasonal and interannual simulations of the Indonesian throughflow, using an Indo-Pacific OGCM forced by ERS winds, highlight the following points.

(1) Climatological seasonal variation is qualitatively consistent with the results of the previous studies. However, about 5 Sv difference in the annual mean transport is observed between SR and IR.

(2) Interannual variations simulated in the present model is also consistent with the available data and the other model results. The throughflow is stronger in 1994/95period than that in 1996/97.

(3) Throughflow transport seems to be regulated by the combination of the two conditions; one at the entrance to the Indonesian archipelago and the other at the exit to the Indian Ocean.

Those points should be investigated in more detail with the observed data as well as various kinds of numerical models.
