Kuroshio south of Japan has a bimodal path characteristics between large meander path (LMP) and non-large meander path (nLMP). Firstly, the time variation in the path pattern of the Kuroshio is studied by use of nine observed distances of the main Kuroshio axis from Japanese coast (Fig. 1a), which is estimated from the main Kuroshio path shown in the Prompt Report of Oceanographic Condition published by Hydrographic Department of Maritime Safety Agency of Japan.

Black bands in the bottom panel show the periods of the large meander path of the Kuroshio.
