Mr.Yohei Sasakawa,President of The Nippon Foundation receiving award of the World Health Organization(WHO)"Health-for-All" Gold Medal.
本年5月14日世界保健機構(WHO)の50周年記念総会で、日本財団が1975年以来WHOを通じ、ハンセン病制圧・天然痘撲滅・熱帯病研究へ貢献(援助額累計1憶2千万米ドル)し続けてきたことが評価され、日本の民間団体としては初めての受賞となった。ハンセン病の患者数は、近年開発された多剤併用療法(MDT)の治療薬(90%以上は日本財団無料提供)によって1000万人以上から115万人以下まで減少した。
At the 50th General Assembly Meeting of WHO on 14 May 1998,The Nippon Foundation was awarded for its continuing commitment and contributions through WHO to "Elimination of Leprosy","Eradication of Smallpox" and "Tropical Disease Researches"-totallng US$120 million-since 1975. It is the first time for a Japanese private organization to receive this prize.
