Table 1: DEFINITION OF DRUG RESISTANCE, WHO/IUATLD SURVEY, 1994-7

 

Acquired drug resistance

Is that which is found in a patient who has received at least 1 month of prior anti-tubercuosis drug treatment.

Primary drug resistance

Is the presence of resistant strains of M.tuberculosis in a patient with no history of such prior treatment.

Combined drug resistance

Is the prevalence of drug resistance among all cases of tuberculosis, regardless of prior drug treatment, in a given year and country.

Multidrug resistance (MDR)

Is defined as resistance to at least INH and RIF, the two most potent drugs and the mainstay of anti-tuberculosis treatment.

(a) Kanamycin, or amikacin, or capreomycin

(b) The daily does of 800 mg can be reduced to 400 mg if poorly tolerated. If ofloxacin is not available, use cycloserine.
