Sterilising activity

There are two indices in clinical practice of the sterilising activity of regimens -

1. An early assessment is the speed with which the last few culturable bacilli are eliminated from the sputum, as measured by the percentage of patients with negative cultures at two months after the start of chemotherapy.

2. The proportion of patients who have a bacteriological relapse after chemotherapy has been stopped. This is the best measure of the sterilising capacity of a regimen in man.
