2.6 Content of the course
2.6.1 The first week of the course
The lectures presented during the first week of the course covered several sectors:
(l) Papers on technical issues:
・Dr D. Enarson presented several papers on the epidemiology and physiopathology of tuberculosis.
・Dr T. Shimao provided lectures on epidemiology of tuberculosis, case-finding and the private sector issue.
・Dr Sang-Jae Kim presented two papers on the bacteriology of tuberculosis and the establishment of microscopy network and quality control for smear examination.
(2) Papers on operational issues:
・Dr D.I Ahn, Medical Officer, Tuberculosis, WHO Regional Office for the Western Pacific, showed the WHO model for a framework of tuberculosis control with the DOTS approach and how to design a new NTP.
・Professor Wang Jie-Xiu reported on the Chinese experience in integrating the tuberculosis programme into primary health care.
・Dr Duanmu Hong Jin and Dr Qian Yuan Fu presented the National Tuberculosis
Programme in China followed by the national prevalence surveys in China.
・Dr P.Y Norval provided two lectures on Tuberculosis Cost Analysis and on
Logistics, Advocacy and role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
(3) DOTS
・Dr Zhang Li-Xing introduced the DOTS programme in Beijing.
・Dr Zhao Feng Zeng provided information on the World Bank Tuberculosis Project in China
・How to apply DOTS in Cambodia, Samoa and Viet Nam
(4) Practical laboratory training
The National Tuberculosis Control Center opened its doors to the participants for a practical demonstration of laboratory practice, under the supervision of Dr Sang-Jae Kim and Dr Cheng Shao Ji, Head of the laboratory department. All participants practiced smearing of sputum, staining and reading of the slides.
