I think it is very meaningful that the influence of Chinese silk is present. Chinese silk was brought to the West, and they were not used as it was, but a new material was created there.

A similar thing can be said to objects from the West to China. For an example, glass came from the West around Syria, and came to China. Some glass objects made in the West were found as they are from the ruins in China.

But apart from those, there were many leaded glass objects found. It is the original kind of glass created in China. Again something new was created by the influence from outside the country.

Grapevine is grown a lot in Sinkiang today. During this time's research, we tasted some delicious wine. Using this grapevine as a motif, a pattern 'vine arabesque pattern' was born. This pattern is used in various fabrics, and in China it is used to decorate mirrors as 'sea animal vine mirror'.

The grapevine, however, was originally from the West. The pattern 'vine arabesque' is also found at the ruin of Palmyra. It was imported to China, and developed as a characteristic Chinese, even more elegant pattern.

Paintings of 'heavenly maiden' are found at Niya Ruin and the rock caves of Kuci and in Dunhuang. They are the figures of nymphs flying in the sky. This figure is also from the West. In Greece, there is the Victory Goddess called 'Nike' and she has wings on her back. Also, the child figures such as Cupid and Eros have wings. Such figures became known to Iran, then to temples of Bamian in Afghanistan, and the figure appear as the wonderful fresco of Milan in Sinkiang, Kuci and Dunhuang, and eventually delivered to Horyuji Temple in Japan. The image of the figure is spread, yet in each place, they developed a different design. Things come from abroad, from the east and from the West. And at each place, their people develop their own culture from them, and this is so meaningful. I feel that such significance can only be recognized when people actually visit the Silk Road and see and feel the places. The tourism for understanding the significance of the history should be highly encouraged.
