Multi-Purpose Cargo Ship
A 6,701-dwt Multi-Purpose Cargo Ship BALSA 51
The BALSA 51, a 6,701-dwt multi-purpose cargo ship, was delivered to California Fuente Inc. of Panama by Sasebo Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (SSK) in January 1996. It is the first ship of total 12 sister ships and the last ship will be completed by the end of 1997. The fleet is operated in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, etc. for transportation of various kinds of dry cargoes such as forest products, steel products, bauxite, clinker, etc.
Type of the ship is a well decker with forecastle and poop, bulbous bow, transom stern and engine room/accommodations in its aft part.
The cargo part is divided into three holds with wide steel hatch covers of end-folding type, which are operated by hydraulic cylinders. For cargo handling, two 15t SWL electro-hydrauric deck cranes are equipped between hatches.
The ship has large capacity of fresh water tanks in fore part. Fresh water will be used mainly for cargo hold cleaning, which is supplied from a membrane type fresh water generator as well as from a plate type using main engine exhaust gas. This system will be effective for cleaning operation in frequent short voyages.
No heating coil is fitted in heavy fuel oil storage tanks, but "FO- shifter" system is adopted, by which heated fuel oil in FO service tank is transferred to the storage tanks at its suction bell-mouths.
