Inhale quickly into the esophagus through the mouth and tracheostoma just before coughing. Then, exhale from the esophagus, producing a sound as if you had a violent hacking cough. It may be more effective for new students to imitate a coughing gesture with a fist against the mouth.
"Coughing" helps students understand how to increase abdominal pressure and inhale.
The "coughing fit" is useful in teaching how to inhale, produce sound, and strain the abdomen for continuous speech through a series of cough.
In my case, I can speak louder and more fluently after I have softly cleared my throat.
