Explain these actions to students using the hand gestures shown. Have them try over and over until they can produce sound. Show a good example, referencing the explanation for Figure 3.

 

The relationship between producing the basic sound and respiration is as follows:

 

First, draw a deep breath through your tracheostoma at the same time you intake air into esophagus, then produce "ah". If you exhale too forcibly, the volume of your chest will be reduced and you will be unable to produce the basic sound, however hard you strain your stomach (abdomen) to raise the diaphragm (see below). Expel as little air as you can through the tracheostoma when you produce sound. Vocalization and respiration follow this way in the same cycle.

 

Show your students over and over how to produce the basic sound.
