Explanation of figures

 

1. Normal speech: Air from the lungs passes through the vocal cords, causing them to vibrate and produce vocal sounds.

2. Esophageal speech: In haling and holding air in the esophagus, then expelling it to produce sound at the esophageal mouth.

3. Artificial larynx with a pipe: Air from the lungs is piped through a tube to produce sound.
