2. Explanation to New Students

 

(1) Talk with new students and their families outside the classroom setting, because this is usually noisy and quite distracting, especially for beginners.

 

Whenever possible, conduct your explanations in the presence of the student's family. New students will tend to feel overwhelmed and confused, and the family's understanding of the process will a great help in preparing and encouraging the student.

 

In your explanation of the points which follow, keep in mind the fact that the first impression is often the most important.

 

(2) Differences in the relationship of organs before and after laryngectomy

 

・ Before surgery, air is inhaled through the mouth or nose and drawn into the lungs. In exhaling, air is brought back up through the windpipe (trachea) when the diaphragm (see below) is raised. This pressure vibrates the vocal cords to produce speech.

 

・ After surgery total laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx including the vocal cords and the thyroid cartilage, which projects into the front part of the
