[PURPOSE]
Economic growth in Asian countries has been so rapid and remarkable in recent years that people throughout the world are looking on today's Asia with admiration. Such a drastic development of its economy, which is now called "the East Asian Miracle", leads the world economy.
Some concerns have arisen, however, as to whether this growth can be sustained. Two serious challenges emerges as the dark side of the miracle:
?@ Although overall wealth has increased due to the success of development strategy, economic and social disparities between urban and rural areas, between social stratum, and between gender are widening.
?A Industrialization and urbanization deteriorate the environment and transform the economic structure of Asian countries to that wasting energy and natural resources.
In our age of globalizing economy and uncertainty, how can we understand the complex today's world synthetically and make sure this development to be continued into the next century.
In this Symposium, we will review the role of statistics in accurately measuring the real world. We will also discuss whether existing statistics are designed so as to provide solutions to future challenges and how they can be improved.
