7. Personal computer communication

 

A system whereby personal computers, with the addition of telecommunications functions, can mutually access one another as well as search external databases by connection to a host computer (center).

 

8. Videotex

 

A system whereby, through normal telephone lines, it is possible to search for various types of character, text or diagram information stored in an information center and to order merchandise or tickets, etc., by connecting the computer in the center with terminals that act as television receivers.

 

9. Facsimile communications

 

Communications using facsimile telegraphy machines to read and transmit manuscripts (text, diagrams, photographs) that include special functions such as simultaneous transmission and automated successive transmission.

 

10. LAN (abbreviation of "Local Area Network")

 

An information network where computers and various communications terminals are established in a limited area, such as the premises of a building or inside a building, and connected by optical fiber cables.

 

11. VAN (abbreviation of "Value Added Network")

 

An information network which, through the intervention of computers on telecommunication lines, serves as an intermediary between different types of computers and performs various functions, such as protocol (communication rules) conversion and media (transmission medium) conversion.

 

12. Hi-Vision (high definition television)

 

A new type of television offering high picture and high sound quality service by, for example, having twice as many scanning lines as current televisions.

 

13. Video phone/teleconferencing system

 

A system which, through telecommunications lines, brings individualsseparated by great distance together on television facing each other and enables dialogue and conferences as if the parties were actually present.

 

14. Multifunction telephone service

 

Telephone service with not only a speech function, but also automatic call transfer, teleconferencing and dial messaging.
