祝辞 日本工学会会長 石川六郎
日本造船学会が創立百周年を迎えられるにあたり，日本工学会を代表して，一言お祝いの言葉を申し上げます。
貴学会が，明治30年，我が国近代産業の揺盤期に創立されて以来，一世紀が経過したわけですが，この間の我が国工業の発展には目を見張るものがあります。
中でも，造船関連分野は，敗戦の壊滅的な状況からいち早く世界の最高水準に達し，鉄鋼業と共に輸出による外貨獲得の代表産業となりました。
その後，2度のオイルショックや近年の急激な為替変動などの激震に見舞われながらも，産・学・官連携のもとに，不断の研究開発と生産技術の合理化を重ね，我が国経済の発展に大きく貢献すると共に，常に世界の造船技術をリードしてこられました。
これらの活動を，学術・技術の研究開発の推進や成果の普及，人的交流の促進などを通じて，支えてこられたのが，日本造船学会であり，その功績は誠に大きく，心から敬意を表するものであります。
航空産業が急速に進歩しつつあるとはいえ，貨物重量ベースでの我が国の輸出入の99.8％は海上輸送によるものです。造船・海事産業は，天然資源に恵まれず，四方を海に囲まれた我が国が，今後とも貿易立国として発展を続けるための必要不可欠な基幹産業であります。
また，地球規模での大競争時代の本格的な到来に際し，全世界の貿易・物流を支える産業基盤の整備・向上という面からも，造船関連分野の進歩に対する必要は一段と強まるものと考えられます。
百年の伝統と素晴らしい実績を持たれる貴学会が，このような社会の期待に応え，今後とも，我が国の造船・海事産業の興隆と，世界の造船技術の進歩・向上に貢献されるべく，益々ご活躍・ご発展されることを祈念申し上げ，お祝いの言葉と致します。
祝辞 SNAME会長 David A. 0'Neil
Konban-wa (means good evening). President Ohba, distinguished guests, colleagues of the Society of Naval Architects of Japan, and my fellow members of SNAME, ladies and gentlemen. It is with great personal honor, high privilege and good fortune that I can be here with you today to congratulate the Society of Naval Architects of Japan.
Representing SNAME's 12,000 members, I salute you for a century of contributions to marine technology, for your ship design construction work, for your technical leadership around the world, and for a myriad of other successes evident in your maritime research and development programs.
While it is fitting to look back and celebrate your rich history, your multitude of achievement, and the pioneering wisdom emanating from the days of Zosen Kyokai - your current emphasis on the rapidly developing future is to be noted for its importance, as well. For you are preparing leaders for this future. They will one day, perhaps 100 years from now, be seen as the pioneers of the 21st century.
Countries such as yours and mine, be they island nations or lands with vast coastlines or long rivers of trade, need public events such as this to remind those who are unaware, or more sadly, uninterested, in the value added to our respective peoples, everyday, by the unseen facets that make trade economical.
The many activities you have embarked on for your centenary program are certainly far reaching, forward looking, and are a credit to not only your technical society and your nation, but moreover to Japan's wonderful people and their future maritime industriousness.
Some time ago, each one of us, as individuals, decided to join this industry, and we began to build our careers.
On the good days we permitted ourselves to reflect on both our own and our industry's progress. Today is one of those days, so I am sure you will, as I will, cherish it dearly.
