FOREWORD

It is a great pleasure to be able to present to you a revised 1983 edition of "An Atlas of Leprosy". Our Foundation published the original edition in limited number two years ago, and it was enthusiastically received far beyond our expectation. With the encouragement we received for the original edition, we decided to make this new version which we hope to have a wider distribution. It is our sincere hope that this new Atlas will be utilized by those engaged in the fight against leprosy, whether in training or in clinical activities in the field.

I should not fail to mention that this Atlas was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Drs. Abalos, Cellona and Fajardo of the Leonard Wood Memorial Laboratory in Cebu, Philippines under the leadership of the late Dr. R. S. Guinto. As most of the readers know, Dr. Guinto belonged to those pioneering scientists in leprosy whose work will have lasting impact until the day this disease is eradicated from the face of the earth. But he was unique among those scientists by being one of the few who came from leprosy endemic countries. Thus his long working life was dedicated, not only in the pursuit of scientific knowledge in leprosy, but also in actually treating leprosy patients and in training of leprosy workers, and in each of these activities he was admired for his dedication and enthusiasm as well as for the successful outcome of what he did.

As a token of our sincere appreciation to his support to our Foundation, as well as of our deep admiration for his long lasting contribution to the leprosy activities, we would like to dedicate this volume in memory of the late Dr. Ricardo S. Guinto.
