Offshore from Japan, in the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate creep under the land plate: the tension caused by this creeping accumulates in the Japan Trench and the Nankal Trough, and the release of this tension causes the great marine earthquakes.

Most of the great earthquakes up to M 8 in this country are classified as being of this type, and it is possible to estimate to some extent which areas are in potential danger, according to the time cycle and the tension built up in the crust.

As for the Suruga Trough, we find traces of destruction along this trough occurring at the time of the Ansei-Tokai earthquake in 1854;
