[Drugs for external use]
Disinfectants for dermatologic use
Alcohol
Ethanol for disinfection
Ethanol for disinfection is an alcohol solution of about 70% which has the most potent disinfectant activity. It must not be applied to the mucosal areas or scrotum. Indications: Disinfection of hands/fingers, normal skin, and injection sites.
Dosage: Wipe the target site well using absorbent cotton which has been wetted with the drug.

Oxydol
Oxyfull (Oxydol)
When exposed to oxydol, blood and pus are immediately degraded into water and oxygen to produce foam. The oxygen generated has a potent disinfectant activity and little potential for injuring normal cells.
Indications: Disinfection and cleansing of wounds and mucosal areas. Gargling.
Dosage: When no foam is produced, the product lacks efficacy. For gargling, Oxyfull should be diluted 10-50 fold.
Storage: Protected from light.

Iodine preparations
?@Dilute iodine tincture
Dilute iodine tincture is a popular disinfectant prepared by diluting iodine tincture with an equal volume of 70% ethanol. It has a potent irritant effect and thus may cause dermatitis. It must not be applied to mucosal areas or wounds.
Indications: Disinfection of hands/fingers and surgical fields.
Dosage: Wipe the target site 2 or 3 times daily with tampons which have been soaked in the drug.
Precautions: 1. Dilute iodine tincture must not be used on individuals who are hypersensitive to iodine.
2. Dilute iodine tincture should be withdrawn when an iodine-induced skin rash or dermatitis is noted.
3. Care should be taken to avoid getting the drug in the eye. If this occurs, the eye should be rinsed thoroughly with water.
?A Isodine (Povidone iodine solution 10%)
Povidone iodine solution kills various pathogens within 30-60 seconds.
Indications: Disinfection of dermal or mucosal wounds, burns, infected skin, hands/fingers, and normal skin.
