Profile of JETRO Singapore

JSMEA's representative office in Singapore is located in JETRO Singapore. JSMEA operates the Ship Machinery Department jointly with JETRO.
JETRO Singapore
Established in 1962, JETRO Singapore has one of the longest histories among JETRO's overseas offices. It has been involved in fostering economic cooperation between Japan and Singapore for more than three decades.
Today, it has a staff of over 30 and functions as a joint establishment of four trade associations representing the ship machinery, shipbuilding, construction and electronics industries, and three prefectural or municipal governments, including Kanagawa Prefecture, Shizuoka Prefecture and Fukuoka City. Along with its counterparts in Bangkok and Hong Kong, it is one of the biggest outposts of JETRO in Asia. At present, work is under way to build up an information network system linking JETRO's offices worldwide and, in this connection, to establish necessary facilities to make JETRO Singapore the information hub in Asia.

The office is situated in the middle of the city, in Singapore's central business district, which is convenient for business activities as it is surrounded by many governmental agencies and Japanese-affiliated companies.
Ship Machinery Department
The Ship Machinery Department of JETRO Singapore was established in 1974 to facilitate closer contact between Southeast Asia and Japanese ship machinery manufacturers along with the development of the maritime industries in the region. It is engaged in (1) collection and supply of information related to the maritime industries, (2) execution of surveys related to the local ship machinery industry, (3) dispatching of maritime industry investigating missions to the countries it covers, and (4) organization of ship machinery-related seminars and participation in maritime exhibitions, all mainly in Southeast Asia.
Currently, these activities are the responsibilities of Mr. Manabu Tateishi, Director, and Ms. Brenda Ang, his assistant. Last year, the department conducted the "Survey on Overseas Procurement of Ship Machinery Materials and Parts," participated and organized the Japanese national booth at SINGAPORT '96 Exhibition, and sent missions to Myanmar and Vietnam, etc.
The department always welcomes visits or inquiries by persons interested in its activities.
