PITCH PROPELLERS FOR INTEGRATED PROPULSION AND

MANEUVERING

1. INTRODUCTION

Subsequent to the oil crisis of 1973 the concept of Controllable Pitch Propellers, or CPP found much wider applications among various kinds of ships to cope with energy saving for vessel operation. Nowadays, in order to achieve enhanced vessel maneuverability with much energy saving capability an integranted system of propulsion and maneuvering has been developed by utilizing CPP. This system promotes automated vessel operation together with overall cost reduction.
Kamome Propeller Company have taken the initiative of developing the system in compliance with the demand. This time I would like to present to you a case of CPP application together with related technologies and products.

 

2. ADVANTAGES OF CPP

Before going into the subject it would be more appropriate to give you the advantages of CPP in a summarized manner.
・ The optimum control of propeller pitch does save energy cost of the main engine.
・ The automation of propulsion engine also minimizes cost for operators.
・ The shaft generator enhances the main engine output.
・ The automatic load control (ALC) does reduce the main engine load and achieve maintenance cost cut.
・ No need of reversing of main engine nor reverse gear for going astern.
・ Excellent maneuverability alongside the berth and at passage through narrow channel of water.
・ Stepless vessel speed control from stop position to maximum speed.
・ The reduction of stop distance does enhance operational safety.
・ The addition of Joystick control system accomplishes highly integrated propulsion and maneuvering system.
