1. Introduction

In 1960, the Nagoya Works of Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI) introduced engineering and technology for low pressure hydraulic machinery and began fabricating deck machinery (winches) and shipboard cargo handling equipment (deck cranes). To date, IHI has manufactured more than 43,000 sets of winches and 3,500 of deck cranes.
During this period, to meet the variety of demands from shipowners and shipyards, IHI has developed advanced technology not only for hydraulic power machinery but also for electric, steam, and diesel engine powered machines, as well as for related devices.
Contained here in are examples of IHI products, report the recent market trends for deck cranes which are included as a type of shipboard cargo handling equipment.
Some cases representative of the deck crane technology developed to meet the demands of clients are also included.

2. Trend of shipboard cargo handling gear

The models of shipboard cargo handling equipment for general cargo ship use, delivered by IHI from 1990 to 1995 have been categorized. Tab. 1 and Fig. 1 clearly show a big demand for 25 and 30 ton capacity cranes (hoisting load). These capacity cranes are mainly installed on handy bulk carriers, and the 35 and 40 ton cranes used for container ships. Tab. 2 and Fig. 2 show that hoisting speed is increasing year-by-year.
