1. INTRODUCTION
We, DAIHATSU DIESEL MFG.CO.,LTD. have successfully developed the medium-speed diesel engines which have been accepted by users with a high reputation. Referring to the DL series engines, the number of engines delivered to users so far amounts to 4,500 units.
In addition to the demands for low specific fuel consumption and for operation on heavy fuel oil, the current serious problems confronting the shipping industry are for the ageing workforce, the shortage of man power and the shortage of skilled engineers. Accordingly, the market requirements today are the maintenance-free high reliable and high durable engines to accomplish labor saving and are the improvement of working environment. Furthermore, the pollution problem owing to NOx and SOx is also raised.
To cope with these requirements of market, in 1994 DK-20 and DK-28 type diesel engines with 6 and 8 cylinders in-line had been developed in full use of the development support tools in addition to conventional technology after summarizing the concept of development in detailed analysis of market requirements. In April this year, 5DK-20 with 5 cylinders had been delivered to market and 6 cylinders DK-26 will be delivered to market in Sep. this year.
This paper introduces the features of the New DK series configuration which had been newly added 5DK-20 and DK-26, structural analysis and test results.
